Advance Myofascial Release - Unwinding

Advance Unwinding is a by invitation only class. In order to attend this class you must have taken MFR for Professionals Classes, attended foundational MFR classes from John Barnes or other reputable MFR instructors.*
This class takes practitioner's skills and practice to a deeper level. The foundational teaching of this class arises from the work of Peter Levine, PhD. Dr. Levine's work in the field of trauma/post traumatic stress is ground breaking. Tracking the normal reaction to threats, he along with Dr. Bessel Vanderkolk have unequivocally determined the "unwinding" component is a crucial phase toward the resolution of trauma.
When a person or animal is traumatized they experience the onset of a cascade of hormones, firing nerve impulses and racing heart beat. This phenomenon is commonly called, the "fight or flight" response, which ends with resolution, usually in the form of tremors or shaking. This biological response to threats served our ancient ancestry well, however in our modern culture we often find this process is often short circuited, never reaching the resolution phase.
The difficulty lies in the fact that much of our modern experience is traumatizing in less overt ways. It's not like the average person is facing a man eating tiger, or are they? Most people encounter extreme levels of stress and trauma over time. Add the daily stresses of surviving to a lifetime of emotional pain experienced in a dysfunctional family and you have the perfect situation to develop "chronic holding" and the potential for chronic pain.
Chronic holding is a slight to intense tightening of the body in either an isolated group of muscles, as in the case of TMJ, or in an overall body pattern as we see with fibromyalgia or myofascial pain syndrome. The resulting effect of chronic holding can lead to a wide array of symptoms, many of which are no where near the causal factor (referred pain). For many people "chronic holding" is a straight jacket of pain from which they cannot unwind. This class will teach you how to facilitate that potential healing.
The energy of the original trauma is retained or "wound up" in the fascia. In the case of a long endured, difficult relationship for example there may be no clear identifying traumatic event. Rather, there is prolonged state of constant arousal, being "on-guard". All the energy required by the body to maintain this level of attention is what leads to the development of chronic holding. This "holding" will unwind for many clients during MFR sessions. It is a natural component of the release. This class will prepare you to facilitate unwinding in natural way, helping the client to understand the process of healing both physical and emotional.
When practitioners are trained to be aware of this phenomenon, the level of treatment and healing response will be greatly accelerated for the client. This class is designed so that the participants will be working on each other through the course of the class. Practitioners will have an opportunity to experience both observationally and physically themselves, the phenomenon of unwinding/somatic release.
One client described an experience of deep unwinding as the ultimate breath of fresh air. Releasing years of chronic holding is life changing on both a physical and emotional level. The goal of this class is to empower and equip the practitioner to open the door to healing for their clients.
